Shopping on a Budget

Pinching those grocery pennies may seem tougher than ever these days, but here are ten tips that just might help:

  • Buy non-perishable goods in case quantities when you can. It costs more money up front, but the per-unit or per-pound price can be much less (especially combined with the discount you get at the Co-op for pre-ordering by the case).
  • Buy only what you need and use what you buy (shop from a list). If an item goes bad or sits unused in the cupboard, consider it money lost.
  • Compare prices on packaged products vs. bulk. The Co-op’s wide selection of bulk grains, pastas, flours, sweeteners, etc. often offer discounts over their packaged counterparts. Our bulk herbs and spices in particular are a great value and, as an added bonus, are typically much fresher than the packaged herbs you’ll find on your “big box” grocer’s shelves.
  • Cook more. Even swapping only one or two meals a week eaten out for home-cooked meals can pay off. Trying out new recipes is one good motivator, and with so many available online, you don’t need to buy a new cookbook.
  • Use coupons and swap them with family, friends, and co-workers. You may have to sacrifice a bit on brand loyalty, but the savings can be well worth it.
  • Share by giving a neighbor a co-op sale flier and posting one at work. If your friends see something they like, go in together with them on case pre-orders.
  • Plan your meals around what you have and what’s on sale rather than shopping for a particular recipe.
  • Get back to basics like whole grains, pasta, and dried beans (foods you can fill up on for less). And choose raw ingredients that give you the biggest nutritional bang for your buck. A lot of empty calories will leave you wanting more.
  • If you eat meat, try committing to even one or two additional meatless meals a week. Whole chicken is $2.29/lb, tofu is $1.39/lb, split peas are .79 /lb. Organic beef? Don’t even ask.
  • Scan your co-op member card or give the cashier your number every time you shop! Any money that may come back your way via a future rebate is well worth the extra second or two at the register.
